Transit to Surrey: Be Environmentally Friendly!

As a student attending the Surrey campus of Simon Fraser University I am faced with a huge dilemma about transportation to campus. On one hand I can take the bus or sky train without having to worry about having enough change because of my U-Pass. But is it worth it?

Currently, I am living in Richmond. If I wanted to bus to SFU from my house I would need to take a bus from beginning to end. This bus starts in Steveston, goes all the way around Richmond and ends up in 22nd Street Station. From there I would need to take the skytrain, which is a lot faster than a bus. All of this would take approximately an hour and a half. If I chose to drive to school, which is my current method of choice, it would only take me thirty-five minutes if I go through the Alex Fraser Bridge.

I am not picky, I park wherever I find a space, but it is not easy to find, nor is it usually a good spot

If I drive to school however, I face the problem of finding a parking spot in less than ten minutes so that I will be able to make it to class on time. There is so much parking, yet it never ceases to amaze me how difficult it is to find a spot. This is why I usually choose to use our city’s transit system rather than drive.

Soon, I will have no choice but to drive to school. This is due to the fact that I will be moving to Abbotsford and the only way to get from Abbotsford to Surrey (other than a car) is to take a Greyhound bus. As much as I would like to do my part in reducing my carbon footprint, I do not see how that will be a possibility as soon as I move.

I strongly suggest that our government start keeping their promises and create a more effective transit system that not only reduces travel time, but also connects more cities together. As soon as this happens, we will all start to feel more inspired to become environmentally friendly and we will begin to see progress on this rapidly growing issue.
