Trash importation into Indonesia officially banned

"With the law on trash management, importation of trash into Indonesia has been officially banned. Otherwise, the country will become a trash barn," Ilyas Asaad said.

The House of Representatives at a plenary session here on Wednesday passed the bill on trash management into law.

Meanwhile, chairman of the House`s special committee on the bill, Hendarso Hadiparmono, said the country needed a law on trash management because proportionate with the growth of the population, the volume of trash produced by the public was also increasing.

A law on trash management was also necessary because there was a widely-held perception that trash was useless waste, not a beneficial resource, he said.

He said the bill contained provisions on the management of household and other kinds of trash.
