The Volcano "Jebel at Tair" (also an island known as Bird's Mountain) Erupted on 9.30.2007 in the Red Sea, in a fury of fire while a NATO fleet was sailing toward the Suez Canal when it spotted the eruption. Yemen has requested help in searching for a Team of 8 or 9 military personal missing (Conflicting info of actual number).  The team is believed to be lost in a mudslide during a earthquake that hit the area. The island of Jabal al-Tair, which lacks a settled population but includes military installations. On friday "the 'increasing' volcanic activity in the island was first registered after a mild quake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the mountainous island. --- eight army troopers were missing in a landslide that was triggered by the earthquake."

A Canadian frigate, HMCS Toronto, was conducting a search and rescue
operation at the request of the Yemen coast guard. Navy spokesman Ken
Allen told Canadian Press lava was spewing hundreds of yards into the
air, with volcanic ash also rising 300 yards Reuters

Latest update
: At least four Yemeni soldiers have been killed after a volcano erupted on a Red Sea island.

The soldiers were burned to death when the volcano erupted on Jabal al-Tair.

The Yemeni coast guard said that around 50 soldiers were on the island at the time of eruption and a major rescue mission was launched.

Most of the garrison was evacuated to the Yemeni port city of Hodeida by the coastguard and the last three soldiers still unaccounted for were picked up the Canadian navy this morning.

From www.chinaview.cn: 4:26am MTN

At least eight Yemeni soldiers were burned to death and some were missing when a volcano erupted on a Red Sea island, soldiers evacuated from the island to the port city of Hodeida, the Yemeni state news agency SABA reported on Monday.

The report said Late on Sunday, Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh flew to nearby Hudaidah port to observe the situation and A Yemeni Defence Ministry official source said the western part of the island had "collapsed" following the eruption.

 Update 8:00 pm MTN

From newsgirl.org Kelly Thornton

The Yemeni Coast Guard rescued 21 of the 29 Yemeni military personnel who were on the island when the volcano erupted and The Canadian ship (HMCS Toronto) located the first survivor about five miles off the coast of the volcanic island. "We managed to pluck him out of the water, after he'd been in there for quite a long time and moments later, picked up another survivor, currently down in sick bay receiving medical care from our doctor aboard," according to Ken Allan of the Canadian Navy's HMCS Toronto.

From Marketwire.com

The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, issued the following statement today:

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the crew of HMCS TORONTO for their contribution to the rescue efforts off the coast of Yemen following a sudden volcano eruption yesterday."

And finally from turkishpress.com

burning to death six Yemeni soldiers, four of the soldiers were killed outright when the volcano erupted.

"Two
other soldiers were rescued from the sea by small boats dispatched from
the frigate, and Yemeni authorities said the six killed and two rescued
accounted for the eight people earlier listed as missing."

 An
AFP correspondent in Hodeida said 15 soldiers among the 49 evacuated
from the island had been injured, most with injuries to their legs.

 Summary:

The Volcano "Jebel at Tair" (also an island known as Bird's Mountain) Erupted on 9.30.2007 in the Red Sea. A NATO Fleet of six ships observed the eruption and was requested by the Yemen Government
to assist in search and rescue operations for military personal
stationed on the island. 8 military personal where announced missing,
while other personal where taken off by Yemen coast guard vessels.
During the (sea / water) search 2 people were found alive and in need
of medical attention, 6 personal were found floating dead and badly
burn. Of the original 8 personal missing all seem to be accounted for!

 With the help of NATO's
fleet, Yemen's coast guard and others assisting in help / rescue
operations and the severity of this event, the loss of life seems to be
minimal.

History of the Volcano also know as birds mountian had
last erupted (lost it top) in 1883. The island had become a heated
issue between the countries of Yemen and Eritrea over ownership. This island being one of several island during this dispute in the 1990's with the Permanent Court of Arbritration in The Hague
eventually found in Yemen's favour and awarded it sovereignty over the
islands. Since this ruling of ownershi, Yemen had placed a garrison of
military personal to protect the area

Some of the Volcano's in the region w/ History of last eruption - Harra Of Arhab, Jabal el- Marha, Jabal Haylan, Harras of Dhamar, Harra es- Sawad, Harra of Bal Haf, Bir Borhut.

I am placing this info for the region because of the volatile of
the eruption reported! It is "not" uncommon for these eruptions to happen
with little or no warning.

Although, I believe it is worth keeping a close eye on the
region as a whole and maybe useful in the near future!

Also worth a look is the website of the HMCS Toronto -- no volcano-related news there yet, but there probably will be eventually.
