Tropical Storm Kevin has been downgraded to a tropical depression on Monday. Forecasters expect Kevin to continue to degrade in the next 24 hours.

Tropical cyclones are defined based on their intensity. Tropical depression is the lowest type with maximum sustained winds less than 17 meters per second, followed by tropical storm, and then hurricane (or simply tropical cyclone).

Kevin's center was about 880 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja, Calif., Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Kevin was plodding on a northern track at about 6 mph with sustained winds of about 35 mph.
