As reported yesterday, a new tropical storm is now forming off the coast of Bermuda - this time called Kyle.

It could become a hurricane before it hits the United States coast, according to the National Hurrican Center.

"A tropical storm watch is in effect for Bermuda," the Miami-based center said in a bulletin at 1200 GMT.

"Interests in the northeastern United States and the Canadian maritime region should closely monitor the progress of Kyle during the next couple of days," it added.

Packing sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (95 kilometres per hour), "additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Kyle could become a hurricane by Saturday," the NHC warned.

It is forecast that the center of Kyle will remain west of Bermuda however.

Another update:

Tropical Storm Kyle will pose a danger to mariners as it churns north through the Atlantic off Massachusetts on Sunday, the Coast Guard warned today. But the storm, which could strengthen into a hurricane Saturday, is expected to take a track so far east it will have little impact on residents ashore.

The Coast Guard said it was readying crews and equipment and warning mariners about the impending tempest, saying it could bring winds of up to 92 mph and seas of 10 to 20 feet.

The agency said it was radioing weather information from shore stations as well as from a Falcon jet. It urged mariners to seek shelter from the storm.
