Some of the beaches on Terschelling and Ameland (Dutch islands) were
flooded with bananas on Wednesday morning. A spokesperson for the
municipality of Terschelling said that ten containers from the ship
Duncan Island had fallen into the North Sea on Tuesday.

"Some of the containers were empty, others were full of bananas," the spokesperson said on Wednesday morning.

At least one container broke open, releasing thousands of bunches of
unripe bananas to wash ashore on the beaches of the two Wadden islands.
"Your ordinary Terschelling resident will probably have a look, but it
is not clear if the bananas are edible," the spokesperson said.

The municipality is still in talks with the ship's insurance company
and the department of public works and water management to decide what
should be done with all the bananas.
