The Tusnami warning for Hawaii has been cancelled after the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand, near the islands of Samoa at 1748 GMT.

THE TSUNAMI WATCH IS CANCELLED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT 1023 AM HST AND A TSUNAMI ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT. AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 0748 AM HST 29 SEP 2009 COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION MAGNITUDE - 8.3 MOMENT MAGNITUDE - 8.0 RICHTER (MS)

There is however, still a tsunami warning for California and Oregon, and it may produce strong currents and will be dangerous to those in the water or very near the water.

A 10 foot wave reportedly hit the Samoa Islands and according to the BBC 34 people have been reported as dead, with 32 missing.
