Manila:

Typhoon Ondoy started with strong rainfalls night on September 25 2009. Many under-estimated its strength. Unexpectedly, downpours began that may compare to a month rainfalls. Many were stranded along the way but what the saddest happening when missing persons and death arises.

Personal Story:

We were about to rescue some of our friends In Timog area of Quezon City when we were being trapped by the floodway along the Philcoa area to Quezon City Circle. The water went up till I could walk no more..We decided to go back but there were no means of transportation but to walk. But on the way back home, cars were already driven away by the flood and people were screaming to be rescrued..We were just lucky that our area was little higher so we could go home safe.

When we turned on the TV to watch news, it was announced and aired that affected areas are : COMMONWEALTH VILL., OLD BALARA, FILINVEST I & II, VISTA REAL, BATASAN HILLS, MAPAYAPA I,II,III and its neighboring Villages,...

AFFECTED AREAS : Quezon City, Taytay Rizal, Marikina City, Ortigas Extension, Pasig City, San Jose Del Monte, Montalban Rizal and more in the provincial areas of Luzon.

A lot of people died and some are still missing. Many homes have gone wasted. Reports that missing people tried to escape the flooded area but were trapped in the middle of the sea like flood in the vicinity of Marikina and Rizal..

The Government tried sending rescues but were also trapped by the bumper to bumper traffic. It was flooded along the way..

With all these, it showed that our country is not ready to face these kind of disaster due to its lack of facilities and rescuers are being outnumbered by the affected areas.

The Wrath Of Mother Nature

Villages in Cainta, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Marikina and Pasig are ricefields where we used to play during my childhood. The Government should find ways in improving rivers and waterways to compensate the rising floodwaters as a result of ruthless urbanization of our farmlands.

No matter what they will do You  can not prepare the city for such a huge rainfall in such a short period of time. If such a rainfall will happened in Holland wchich is well known as a country with leading specialists in irrigation they wouldn't be able to do anything. Such a shame my favourite city beautiful Manila!!!

I don't think so. The situation very different in Holland. There are many waterways, artificial lakes and flood planes were the water could go, even in the cities. There many pomping stations. Each of which has a diesel powered backup pomping station near by in case there is no power.
When a storm is approaching the pomping stations wil lower the level in the waterways in advance. Also the storm surge barrier can be used the keep the rivers on the level of the low tide by keeping sea water from flowing up river at high tide.
Holland is also flat. The water won't build up in a small area like in manila were all the water flows in to the valleys. There probity would be some flooding with so much rain, but not enough to wash away houses.
But if rains a lot more up river in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France at the same time, Some parts of Holland will have a big problem. the Rijn and maas rivers won't be able to handle that much water.
(Europes number 2 and 3 largest rivers)

it was 11:00am when i ended my shift at Convergys Glorietta5. i rode the MRT. on my way home, it was raining torrentially. there were queues of buses, cars and trucks along EDSA as it was impassable. when i reached North Avenue, i spent like an hour in Trinoma hoping that the rain will stop soon. But alas! it even poured heavier! so i decided to just walk home  till Talipapa, QC.. i walked along Mindanao Ave. i was then drenched in the rain and was like freezing to death as my bones are like crackling. there were hundred of us walking, both young and old, passing by immobile cars. i passes by veterans and the flood was waist high. i said that'll work because i know how to swim. but to my surprise when i reached the intersection between Minda Ave and Congressional because the water was like neck deep high and the current was so strong that even large vehicles can't pass by. i just stood there in desperation for like 6 hours as i was soaked in water near KFC. i was so weak.. havent eaten lunch,i was starving,i was freezing, i was so frightened! Good thing there were great rescuers in uniform. i certainly havent recognized them but they were so brave and heroic and helped us cross that street turned into a river.  they tied ropes in both ends of the streests and assisted us cross. i can remember my fingers were too ouchy bec of my strong grip to the rope.i just cant forget the faces i saw that day. everyone, rich or poor old or young, was so surprised and fearful ! it was really a day of FEAR, BRAVERY and HEROISM

I just heard about this storm.  My wife and child live in Zambales, the village of Castillejos. Can not call them, no idea if they are okay.  Could someone out there attempt to call her to let her know her Asawa in California is aware of her plight.  Her name is Victoria R. Pierson, San Jose Brngy. Cell # 0920-525-8071.  I am worried to death. For her and my daughter age 2.Pray for the victims of Ondoy. This is a worst tragedy than Pinatubu for the peoples of Luzon Island, its provinces and the Philippines.

Thank you for your efforts in contacting my Asawa in Zambales Province, the Village of Castillejos. If you contact my wife - Victoria R. Pierson, call me here in El Cajon, California at 01-619-398-6116. All lines are affected and making a call from the US is difficult. Concerned about her and my daughter's condition re: massive flooding throughout Luzon Island Provinces.

It was really a day of fear and bravery. I watched the news since morning and I had nothing to do but to pray. My cousins called from Montalban. They were crying. They said they were on the rooftop of the 2nd floor of their house. I just can't imagine how deep it was. So terrifying since they were with a new-born baby and an 80-year old woman. They stayed there the whole night through. They haven't even eaten their lunch and dinner yet. Luckily, they were rescued the next day. But it is very frightening to think the children and the old ones who were helpless and can't even swim.  I think it is the time for us not to underestimate the power of nature and be prepared so that this dreadful scenario won't happen again.

May the Buddhist gods bless all who read and responded to my submission.  Nine subscribers contacted me here in the States to let me know that they shared my concern for my family in Castillejos, Zambales.  I am pleased  to report that both my wife and daughter are fine - but up to there thighs in flood water. No one expected this storm to be so fierce!!Vicky told me three babies in her barangay died. The majority of Castillejos is flooded. Her home is okay, but wet. I would like to thank those who managed to contact her. She was surprised by the calls, as my attempts to contact her failed. I can rest easier now that she and Mary Grace are okay. Please continue to send your prayers to the families who lost loved ones, and that the Philippine government gets the help to them they need.I was so amazed that this matter did not hit the news here until tonight! Out of sight out of mind, I guess. Here's hoping that President Obama hears of this, and sends whatever assistance he can.  Again, thank you for responding to my request. I can't thank you enough.Nam Myoho Renge Kyo! My prayers to my Gohonzon have been answered. The internet is indeed the most powerful communications media on the planet.

at the very moment,, everything seems to be back to normal. but  the fact remains that millions worth of properties were lost and hundreds of lives were devastated. donations keep pouring from local and international institutions but seeing the situaton in a  microlevel, it would be hard for the affected  families to recover. we'll just hope and pray for the best.

Re: Marikina Flood 26 Sept. 2009,    death toll in Provident Village alone:    Official( according to MCF)= 16 dead    unofficial = 58 deadA SENATE/CONGRESSIONAL  INVESTIGATION IS IN ORDER!!! The recent flood is very unfortunate result of both natural and man made calamities. The release of excess dam waters was done without thinking of the consequences. it is both a criminal and insane act."The Angat Lake created by the Angat dam is the main potable water supply source of the Metro Manila Area. However this water when in over abundance, due to very heavy rainfall, is also the cause of widespread flooding, deaths, and accompanying misery affecting not only the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga but also the Metro Manila Area. This happens everytime the dam water reaches its maximum height and the spilled water races down through the gullies and streams to the east of the dam and this rampaging water joins the water of the Marikina river system multiplying the floodwater volume of the Marikina River system thereby causing rapid increase in the volume of floodwater in the Marikina Valley. This happens everytime very heavy rains overfills the Angat water reservoir. The solution to this problem is the construction of water diversion/power generation tunnels to divert excess water towards the east emptying into the Pacific Ocean. It will also generate power. It is not enough that the excess water is emptied into the heavily populated areas, i.e, Bulacan, Pampanga area,Marikina Valley, as it definitely will cause multiple death and destruction downstream. Diverting the excess water to the east will save so many lives as the east side is relatively sparsely populated and at the same time generate power for electricity. The Government of the Republic of the Philippines must consider this as a permanent solution to the recurring problem of flooding in the central Luzon area and Metro Manila."I'm sorry for encroaching into your space but I do not know where to start. Please think about the opinion I expressed above. You may freely share this thought with your friends, hoping that someday, the people criminally responsible for the release of  Angat dam water, on the morning of 26 September 2009,shall face the bar of justice. An in-depth study and analysis of google maps and wikimapia maps will prove my point. A short helicopter trip tracing the path of the floodwaters will verify this matter. The evidence left by the rampaging flood water will trace it back to its source and is difficult to erase.

I felt sorry for those who are affected by the typhoon. I saw the news on TFC and I almost cried while ironing my clothes. Horrible experience!!! I cant imagine how people suffered on that tragic event. This must be an outstanding lesson to our corrupt goverment and hope they learned something from the tragedy. Ive read that philippine goverment is asking for international aide but based on my sources only little amount of  money are being donated from rich countries maybe because they are afraid the money will be used for nothing. Corrupt administration please help those who are affected and dont think of your personal interests and how much you can put in your pocket/wallet.

This was indeed the strongest typhoon came to Philippines. I was shocked, because during that day, I was playing computer and doing my homeworks. I thought it was just a strong rain, so I keep on making myself busy. I kept on talking to my friend, and we're talking about the typhoon, It was driving me so crazy that I don't ever think that many people are suffering. No rich, no poor, everyone was affected. Luckily for those people who's not affected by the typhoon, but one thing I want to tell to all of you. Just pray hard....
