Typhoon Sinlaku - Okinawa - Update 4 - 1900hrs 14 Sep 2008 (Updated)
Similar to another monsterous system that reeked extreme damage to Asia last year, Typhoon Krosa, this year Typhoon Sinlaku seems to not want to go away. According to the latest Weather Underground predictions, the storm is heading back towards the main Ryukyu island. The current forecast is similar to the prediction Google Earth originally reported on 11 September. As of 1900hrs* on 14 September 2008, Okinawa is still in Tropical Cyclone condition 3 with brief breaks in the overcast sky earlier in the day for tidbits of sunshine. Additional updates will be posted as conditions warrant.
*As of 2330hrs heavy downpours, flashing electricity, and thunderous booming cracks of lightning are literally up top of us. The direction of the storm has, once again, been recalculated within the past few hours

A Pacific typhoon or tropical storm is a tropical cyclone that forms in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The basin is demarcated within the Pacific Ocean from Asia, north of the equator, and west of the international date line.[1] Storms from the Eastern and Central Pacific crossing the date line are re-designated as typhoons. This basin features the strongest cyclones on record.
Typhoon seasons include the entirety of the calendar year. Most storms tend to form between May and November.
The word "typhoon" comes from the Chinese 颱風/台风 (pinyin: tái fēng; Jyutping: toi4fung1).

Typhoon Sinlaku slams into Taiwan, injures 13
Typhoon Sinlaku slammed into Taiwan with heavy rain and strong winds, leaving at least 13 people injured.
Hundreds of domestic and international flights were cancelled, and traffic on highways was interrupted by landslides.
Power and telephone services were also disrupted to nearly 100,000 households as trees were uprooted by the strong winds.
Hundreds of residents in northern mountain villages were evacuated to safety.
The typhoon lost momentum after making landfall in Taiwan on Saturday, but weather forecasters called on the public to remain vigilant, as the storm had brought heavy rains across the island.
The forecasters said Typhoon Sinlaku is expected to move northeast towards Japan later on Sunday. But they said the typhoon's outer bands will continue to affect Taiwan and eastern China.

Thank you Heritage,
This one is moving much slower than usual. Your side must be tired of the rain by now. How much damage has occurred, or have you even been able to get out to survey the area?

Hi JawnOn,
Yes, it has been almost two full days of rain! Quite a lot of flooding and reports of mud slides. The rain and associated flooding and mudslides are the real dangers. My neighborhood in western Taipei County is holding up well.

And thank goodness it's over here in Taiwan! Back to sunny days, just in time for fall to come sweeping in.
