UPDATE 3, North East Taiwan 0000z:

Typhoon Sinlaku is crawling towards Taiwan after intensifying into powerful typhoon. According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Sinlaku is packing sustained winds of 95kts with gusts up to 135kts.

Taiwan is under typhoon warnings from the Central Weather Bureau who expected the storm to make landfall over the northeastern side of the island either tonight or tomorrow morning local time.

Sinlaku is a slow moving storm which increases the risks off severe flooding and damage. Some forecasts estimate the typhoon could take up to 24 hours to cross Taiwan which if verified could lead to vast quantise of rain falling.

I am in the town of Toucheng on the NE coast with fellow storm chaser and journalist Geoff Mackley to cover typhoon Sinlaku first hand. Winds are starting to increase and the area has been lashed by torrential rains all day. I am expecting conditions to worsen further over the next few hours.

Be sure to check back for regular updates on the storm as well as photos and video from the worst affected areas.

The bureau, which updates its report every three hours, said Sinlaku was a slow-moving but strong typhoon and would bring a heavy downpour and strong wind if it hit the island. The rain was likely to be up to 1,300 mm.

The strongest gusts and rain were expected late on Saturday night and Sunday morning, it said.

The whole island was bracing for the storm. Residents in many parts had prepared sandbags to prevent water from getting in their homes, and relevant departments were distributing pumps. Counties including Taipei, Keelung and Ilan announced suspension of work and classes from Friday night or Saturday.

Cheers for the flags guys.

I'll stay safe if this ends up heading towards Taiwan. The steering environment for the storm is very weak at the moment hence the very slow movement. It could be another day or so before we know which area is going to be hit hardest by Sinlaku. More updates to come tomorrow!

The islanders are bracing for the storm to hit:

Taiwan's weather bureau on Thursday warned the island to take precautions for Typhoon Sinlaku which was approaching with an increasing intensity.

The bureau said the possibility of Sinlaku's landing on the island over the weekend could not be ruled out, and if it did, heavy damage was expected.

In Taipei, the sunny morning on Thursday gave way to sudden heavy rain at noon, but it cleared soon. However, intermittent heavy rain fell again before dusk. Other areas of the northern part of the island have also reported heavy rain.

Precaution measures are being taken throughout Taiwan. In Kaohsiung, police on Thursday suspended issuance of permits for mountaineers and notified those already in the mountains to climb down or seek shelters as soon as possible.

The Hualian County disaster prevention center has upgraded the disaster prevention level, and is controlling shipping and coastal sightseeing in areas that might be in danger.

Sustained winds of 140 mph. See Wunderground for tracking and latest. Looks like it might miss Taiwan and even weaken before it makes landfall. We can always hope for the best.

Be safe in your journey. Although still in TC-3, we've started getting a bit of rainfall on Okinawa due to the system. I'm sure it will be quite hectic in Taiwan.

Hello.

I've landed safely in Taiwan where it's now pouring with rain and the winds are quite gusty. The storm is due to crawl over the NE tip of the island tomorrow so I will be there to cover the action live. more updates to follow once i've got some much needed rest!

Hello.

Sorry for the lack of updates, it's been a frantic 36 hours. I've heard reports that Sinalku killed 7 people, very sad. The storm was very fierce as it made landfall over NE Taiwan and it dumped over 1600mm of rain in places.

I put together this short film which shows the furiocity of the storm - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ny_gFPn2L0
