From my personal blog:

According to the American Wind Energy Association, the United States is now the leader in wind energy production. Wind energy in 2008 has risen and current wind power capacity is rated at 19,549MW, an increase of 2,726MW from 2007. Germany currently has a wind power capacity of about 23,000MW, but does not generate as much power as the U.S., due to lighter winds.

The AEWA also projects that by end of year 2008, some 7,500MW of wind power capacity will be brought online in the United States. This projected capacity demonstrates a 45% increase from 2007. Recent fossil fuel prices and tax incentives have provided a prime environment for wind energy related projects.

One issue causing wind projects to be rushed before the end of 2008, is the uncertainty of federal tax incentives and rebates that are set to expire late 2008. Without these credits, the future of new wind energy projects is in jeopardy. Recent jobs and businesses catering to the wind power industry will have to be scaled back without the benefits experienced in 2008, extended throughout 2009. Though, financial burdens will first be absorbed by the wind industry, these high costs will be passed on to consumers, and create a recess of clean energy production.

AWEA Executive Director Randall Swisher stated, “At a time when unemployment is at a 4-year high and the economy needs every stimulus it can get, a rapid extension of the credit should be on any economic priority list for Congress.”

Congress must look to clean energy solutions to help rebuild an economy that threatens the livelihoods of millions of Americans. In addition to providing jobs, wind power can help secure America’s Independence from foreign sources of energy. The United States has an opportunity to lead the world into new innovating ways of producing energy and electricity, provided U.S. leaders provide incentives to expand the renewable energy infrastructure.

Thanks for spreading the word.  If you'd like to see the wind power production tax credit extended, go to www.powerofwind.com and contact your representatives in Congress.

The lead is total wind production though, not per Person or per Capita!

See: http://www.livescience.com/environment/080723-us-wind-energy.html

If one brings it back to scale of per Scare Kilometre and per Habitant per Sc/Km than the US is still far behind!

Very correct Paschen, Per Capita the US has a LONG way to go, but, as a nation it is encouraging.  I guess the main point is persuading U.S. Congress to extend tax incentives that will continue the production.  Thanks for the flag Paschen.

Yes it is good news and in the right direction as well! Lets hope your Congress will extend the tax incentives and maybe even do more then that!

I am just about to complete our Solar system here and I am dinging trenches now to lay down an underground pipe system using the Earth to cool and heat the house and to store excessive heat from the ruff accumulated in the day time in the ground to be used later when it will be cooler again or to pre heat the Water and then use solar to do the rest and wind energy for the shorter day light days!

Burton Wold Wind Farm.
The blades of the first wind farm in Northamptonshire UK have begun to turn marking a major contribution to the county’s green energy quota.

Burton Wold Wind Farm......With the ability to produce enough energy for 10,000 homes, or 25% of all the homes in the borough of Kettering UK, it's a significant step towards the region’s renewable energy requirements.

Through the production of this renewable energy, it will reduce carbon dioxide by 40,000 tonnes each year - the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road.

Great photo and reply Pixel.  I think I have found a link to supplement your info at http://www.burtonwoldwindfarm.com.  Very interesting.

Wind turbine:

The wind turbine stands on the top of a abandoned waste deposit. Therefore the underground had to be improved with gravel and compressed for the foundation. The octagon foundation plate has a diameter of approx.14 m and a thickness of 2.2 m. The foundation plate can be adjusted any time with hydraulic presses, as it can always be that the bad underground shows some additional settlements. The wind turbine itself has an overall high of 99.8 m, a hub height of 66.8 m and a rotor diameter of 66 m. The tower diameter is 4.15 m at the base and 2 m at the top. The wind turbine has an output of 1.5 MW so it can produce approx. 2,200 MWh electrical energy p. a.. That is enough for about 1000 households and it reduces CO2 emissions by 2,230 tonnes p.a..

China's pushing wind but not nearly enough I think. Just hope they can do more and get away from all the damn polluting Coal plants everywhere...

We have the same problem in America, Coal energy is used for the majority of electricity needs, and we are still building more.
