The Coalition’s planning reforms will damage high streets and lead to more out-of-town developments, the retailer John Lewis has warned.
In a submission to MPs, the store chain claimed that the current plans weakened protection of market towns already struggling in the recession.
The retailer was also disappointed that there were no measures to encourage smaller shops back into town centres.
The National Planning Policy Framework is designed to “streamline” the planning process but opponents call it a “developer’s charter” that will destroy the countryside.
“Save our countryside - don't ruin it with a building free-for-all”
- Don’t rush dangerous changes through - stop and rethink the plans
- Don’t let construction lobbyists call the shots
- Protect the delicate balance between economic, social and environmental needs
- Tackle the big causes of house shortages, like credit availability and cuts to affordable housing
