Here's an update to the Eco Town story - opposition councillors have joined together to challenge the ruling labour group over plans to build an 'eco town' just outside the UK city of Leicester:

Original Story:

The British government want to build several new 'eco towns' around the country. The people of Leicestershire can't fathom why one, Pennbury, should be plonked on beautiful countryside just outside Leicester. Here Jonathon Calder puts forward the idea that Leicestershire is seen as an easy target as nobody really cares or 'knows' about Leicestershire which is always portrayed as boring and even advertised itself as such at one point. This time Leicester folk are biting back with a series of citizen adverts hijacking  by detournement of Co-Op  (the company  wanting to build the  town) video adverts (some alongside this article).

These days, there are few prejudices people feel comfortable displaying in public, but you can always get away with being rude about the Midlands.

This dismissive attitude goes back a long way. Hilaire Belloc described the Midlands as "sodden and unkind", and when Leicester council engaged a London advertising agency to boost the city's image, it was naturally offered an achingly ironic campaign with the slogan "Boring, boring Leicester".

As with all prejudices, the most insidious effect of "Midlandsism" is the way its victims internalise it.

That doesn't seem to be very 'eco-friendly' if you ask me!
