UPDATED: Stampeding Elephants, Dozens of Tornadoes Across Plains by PEP

Storm damage from tornadoes and high winds on Plains June 5 through early evening.

UPDATE: 10:25 p.m. CDT: Panicked elephants, a roof rolled off a church by high winds, and dozens of tornado reports across the Plains today and tonight are keeping residents and emergency management people on their toes.

In Kansas, a tornado spooked circus elephants, which ran for safety through several neighborhood yards before being herded up. In Tulsa, already reeling from extreme wind damage and power outages last weekend, high winds ripped the roof off a church.

Throughout the Plains, tornadoes have spun up across hundreds of miles. My area is under tornado watch until 5 p.m., and the heavy thunderstorms are moving in. Winds up to 70 MPH are raking some areas.

Update: at least four small earthquakes 2.5 and under rattled the metropolitan Oklahoma City area today. The region has experienced increased numbers of earthquakes since 2006.

Note: I had written a good-size commentary to go with the highlight. For some reason, during one of the graphic add-ins, it disappeared. Oh, well.

At 2:27 p.m., the National Weather Service received a report that Gotebo was being evacuated due to a large wildfire that was threatening the town.

A fire was apparently burning much of the small southwestern Oklahoma town. Jack Carson, spokesman for the Department of Agriculture said a rural fire coordinator was dispatched to the fire that is believed to have been caused by power lines toppled by high winds.
