Tough laws in the US for hit and runs who kill cyclists going into work. In soft Britain you'd be lucky with up to three years. It looks like this State is taking the matter really seriously.

Just why in Britain are we so lax with motorist killers?

"Michael Steele, a young husband and a hard worker who rode his bike to work, is dead.

Christina Rivkin, a wife and mother of two with an alcohol problem unchecked by in-patient care and participation in a 12-step program, is going to state prison for the next 20 years, followed by 20 years of probation. She had faced up to 50 years on DUI-manslaughter and charges of leaving the scene of a crash at a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Pensacola."

She probably would have gotten a wrist slap in Canada.  If they keep her locked up she won't be able to kill again.

Seems like a lot of time for what amounts to stupidity. If she won't quit, what you gunna do?

Any idea on the age of her children?

I don't know about just a wrist slap in Canada... But certain states in the US can be very strict on driving related accidents and deaths.  There are mainly people incarcerated in the states, from all over the world, simply because they were involved in motor vehicle accident that killed another person. Sadly most of the time it is and "accident" that could have happened to anyone... Either way, this particular topic is very sad as is any accident that happens.  In this situation, I feel sad for all of the families and people this incident has touched...

I didn't realise that some states in the US were so tough.

This particular crash was someone who knowingly drank alcohol and drove, and deliberately drove off. Stupid drivers with a poor attitude like that, should be off the roads.  When they kill people, there is a knock on to their friends and family. Considerate drivers should only be on the roads, that's why they take a test. Stupidity & Pranks kill.

I think more more motorists who 'simply' kill motorists off the road should be jailed for a long time. Some motorists kill pedestrians on the zebra crossings even though the speed limit is 30mph and say' they didn't see the elderly person coming' (yes right) and the motorists gets a soft sentence. I think more roads by crossings should be 20mph and more 'I didn't see you motorists' would get put down for longer. An 'accident' may actually be not an accident, if the speed limit was lower.  When I try to walk at zebra crossings, you often see motorists go past, refusing to slow down and I also see motorists not even noticing you are there despite Hi-Viz clothing. Perhaps it is because they cannot stop.

Once there was an article about motorists failing to even see a clown on a uniycle.  No doubt it will be an accident because the motorist didn't see him, even though he should have been looking properly for cyclists.

Then you get motorists killing people because 'the leaves are wet', but they should drive a lot slower in poor road conditions, particularly if there vulnerable users. I think some countries are just too soft with dangerous drivers. Well done to the US state for being tough.

Accidents can be stupidity too.
