Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics: Men's Downhill Rescheduled
The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games has begun, but the weather is already playing havoc with the mountain events. The men's downhill ski event has been rescheduled from today until Monday February 15th, but no time has been announced yet.
The International Ski Federation (FIS) said that the conditions were just too slushy today for the event to take place and although they left the decision until about seven hours before the event was scheduled to take place, they were hoping the conditions would improve.
However, the weather did not cooperate, and the first Alpine race of the Olympic Games was called off. This was an especially tough decision for Canadians as this event was thought to be one of the events Canada would win a Gold Medal.
The conditions up at Whistler have been a mixture of rain, snow, fog and increasingly warm temperatures. The snow is now considered too dangerous for such high-speed skiing.
The women's super-combined was rescheduled yesterday, and that was supposed to take place tomorrow.
Officials will likely try to get women's training in Sunday.
Whistler is expected to get a mixture of snow and rain today with mild temperatures.
There has only been one of six training runs completed for men and women since the training runs began.
Stacey Cook from the USA fell on the course on Thursday due to poor visibility; she will compete but training events have been canceled since then.
Rules require that at least one complete training session be held before any downhill or super-combined race, meaning the women still need to get a practice run in.
Days off are often built in to the schedule to accomodate rescheduling as weather is such a factor in ski events.

Monday, Feb. 15 is also President's Day in the U.S. (joint holiday celebrated for the February birthdays of past presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln). Because of the federal holiday, I hope that many people are able to see the rescheduled men's downhill final.
