This is an eyewitness report from the NowPublic member Barbara McPherson who was on the scene.
NP Rank:
This big storm that is lurking over the BC coast has Vancouver Island rivers on a floodwatch. Some of the Island has received over 200 mm of rain in the past couple of days. On the east coast of Vancouver Island we are spared some of the rainfall because the Island Mountain Range sieves out some of the moisture and today we had a couple of hours respite from the downpour, but at six o'clock at night it's pouring again.
This storm is sucking warm moist air from the subtropics. The temperature is warm. Any snowfall on the mountains tends to melt and adds to the water racing towards the sea. The pictures accompanying this post are of a river nearby -- the Nanaimo River. Where I took the photos is quite close to the ocean. In the summer this stretch of river is placid, relatively safe for children and the scene of loungers in inner tubes. Today it is brawny and dangerous, moving whole trees out to the estuary.

Yeah, the rain lately is just terrible. I'm getting ready to swim everywhere over here on the mainland
