Vatican opts for Green Energy with huge solar panel roof
Finally Vetican is heading for green colour, in terms of saving the energy and adopting the solar power the vetican. This wil be a good gesture and role model for the world to be followed.Only thing vetican could have done for better is the time duration should have been less.
The Vatican was set to go green on Wednesday with the activation of a new solar energy system to power several key buildings and a commitment to use renewable energy for 20 percent of its needs by 2020.
The massive roof of the Vatican's "Nervi Hall," where popes hold general audiences and concerts are performed, has been covered with 2,400 photovoltaic panels -- but they will not be visible from below, leaving the Vatican skyline unchanged.
The new system on the 5,000 square meter roof will provide for all the year-round energy needs of the hall and several surrounding buildings, producing 300 kilowatt hours (MWh) of clean energy a year.
The system, devised by the German company SolarWorld, will allow the 108-acre city-state to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by about 225,000 kilograms (225 tonnes) and save the equivalent of 80 tonnes of oil each year.
The Holy See's newspaper said on Tuesday that the Vatican planned to install enough renewable energy sources to provide 20 percent of its needs by 2020, broadly in line with a proposal by the European Union

Yes Amy ran the story Oct 2, but I think they mentioned they were still working on it. Anyways the source she quoted it from is inaccessible, so thanks for keeping the story going.
I think they powered up the buildings yesterday, by the sounds of it.

Good news for Solarlife. 5000 m² 500 kw Peak power solar PV. That's more than a football stade installation. The smallest state in the world makes an effort to reach Europe's 20% renewable energy for 2020. I started to write about solar one year ago, confronted with ignorance and stupidity of US-coal-car industry lobby writers. So I appreciate your note Intelligence goes solar. Stupidity goes sub-prime.

Looks like a boost for their image.
Now if they can keep on changing all of their churches in the world, I will know they are serious.
I think the Vatican did it more to stop their reliance on Italy for power, than for humanity.

Thanks all of you for commenting on the energy issue, as i have earelier said the cost is the big hurdle which our scientists need to minimise soon.

The Vatican Museum is a beautiful building that holds a lot of history that everyone should be able to experience.
