Vermilion Bay Rig Explosion In Gulf Of Mexico: Coast Guard Responding To Fire On Mariner Energy Owned Rig
An explosion and fire aboard a rig in Vermilion Bay has sent 13 workers into the water in the Gulf of Mexico.
The production platform rig, the Vermilion oil rig 380, is owned by Mariner Energy. The rig was located roughly 90 miles south of Vermilion Bay.
CNN is reporting that 13 people were on the rig. One rig worker was apparently injured.
In an interview with a Coast Guard representative, CNN reported that all 13 have been accounted for.
Petty Officer Casey Ranel says the blast was reported by a commercial helicopter company about 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.
The one injured worker will likely been taken to Terrebone Hospital near Vermilion Bay.
The Vermilion Bay oil rig was not an active rig at the time of the explosion and fire. Preliminary reports indicate there is no oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico but the Coast Guard has equipment and personnel ready if needed.
