Vernal Equinox Comes to Northern Hemisphere on March 20, 2009

The vernal equinox will come to the Northern Hemisphere on March 20, 2009 marking one of two annual dates when the day and night are of equal lengths.  The other equinox, called the autumnal equinox, occurs in September.

Equinox literally means "equal night". On the vernal (spring) and autumnal (fall) equinoxes, day and night are the same length. Neither hemisphere gets more sunlight than the other, so both have similar seasons (fall in one hemisphere and spring in the other).

How high the Sun gets in your sky, and how long it is above the horizon during the day, depend not only on the season, but also on your latitude.

During an equinox the Sun is at the Earth's equator meaning that both hemispheres of the planet are exposed to the same amount of sunlight.  The Sun's equatorial positioning also means that the day and night are the same length.
