Shark , most dreeded animal in water, is facing the threat of extinction, from non other than humans. There is a good news for environmentalist , regarding shark.

The shark came to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach not long after being born in the wild and lived there for eight years with no males of the same species, said Beth Firchau, the aquarium's curator of fishes.

The 5-foot shark died after being removed from the tank for a veterinary examination, and a subsequent necropsy revealed that Tidbit was carrying a fully developed shark pup nearly ready to be born, Firchau said.

Demian Chapman, a shark scientist with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University in New York state, performed DNA testing that showed the pup had no father. Virgin birth such as this is known as parthenogenesis.

"It tells us that the original case we documented last year was not some fluke of nature. This is something that might be more common than we think it is, and widespread among sharks," Chapman said in a telephone interview

Thanks Anamika,for your GS flag.

This one is very good news as far as survival of sharks are concerned.Large scale killing of sharks along with all marine species is going to destroy the maeine ecological balance.

We don't have a problem off the Coast of VA or the US as far as I know of Sharks survival. They survived the prehistoric times I'm sure they will survive in the waters now. I've found that intentional hunting of sharks, primarily for the Asian delicacy shark fin soup. The commercial fisherman do have a certain time of the year they can fish for shark here in Virginia Beach,VA mainly around the winter months.  They regulate if fishermen get caught with more than what they are to have is very serious, they could lose their fishing license. This is their lifeline how they live so they will comply. It's like hunting for Whales as well the Asian people need to be stopped but this is what they know.
