Volunteers across the Philippines took action to protect and improve the environment for future generations on September 20 by participating in the global environmental campaign, Clean Up the World.  Coordinated by Clean Up the Philippines Movement, Inc., Thousands of volunteers from different parts of the country united to clean up their local environment.

Speaking on behalf of the Movement, Atty. Sharon Millan-Decano, CUP Secretary-General, expressed her appreciation for the extraordinary efforts of local volunteers.

“The Filipino community understands the urgent need to protect our local and global environment, not only for ourselves but for future generations.

“The achievements of volunteers have shown that the people of the Philippines really do care about the state of the environment.

“Together we are addressing the problem of climate change.  Thank you to our Members and Volunteers who conducted various environmental initiatives in their own locality such as recycling programs, tree planting, environmental awareness education programs and energy conservation programs.” she said.

The event was part of one of the world’s most successful community-led global environment campaigns, Clean Up the World. The campaign involves an estimated 35 million volunteers in over 110 countries each year, uniting them in a common goal to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.

“Clean Up the World empowers people across the globe to join together to do something about local environmental issues. No matter where you are in the world you can make a difference,” said Ian Kiernan AO, Founder and Chairman, Clean Up the World and UNEP Global 500 Laureate.

“I congratulate and thank the volunteers of Clean Up the Philippines campaign for their outstanding efforts.” In 2008, Clean Up the World is encouraging members to take action at a local level to help address climate change. Energy saving education programs, planting trees to absorb greenhouse gases, walk to school or work days and waste reduction projects are just a few of the activities members can do.
