Volunteers picking up litter find dead dogs

Associated Press - January 20, 2009 9:55 AM ET

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis residents volunteering to pick up litter on Martin Luther King Jr. Day said they found dozens of dead dogs among the trash.

The volunteers with Clean Memphis, a nonprofit group, worked Monday during a cold and windy morning in Frayser, a suburb, to clean up areas that were notorious for dumping.

Clean Memphis director Janet Boscarino reported to police that volunteers found two dumping grounds for dogs, at least a dozen of carcasses in each one. She said there could be more in the surrounding forest.

The Commercial Appeal reported some of the bodies were just bones, but many appeared to have recently died.

City offices were closed Monday, so it was unclear whether animal control services were notified about the dogs.

This is sad news, but I know people who were picking up litter and found a dead dog. Just not this many. I hope that it is not related to dog fighting.
