Wallow Fire Burns Over 469,000 Acres

The Wallow Fire, burning along Arizona's border with New Mexico, has consumed over 469,000 acres, becoming the largest wildfire in state history.  It is only 18% contained. Only 32 homes have been destroyed so far, though over 2,000 are threatened. The Rodeo-Chediski Fire of 2002, by contrast, burned 465 homes.

The differences lie in wildfire prevention methods, as well as in where the Wallow Fire is taking place. Currently, slower winds are helping firefighters as they try to contain the blaze, but winds are expected to pick up as the week progresses.

Greer, Alpine and Nutrioso remain in danger from the Wallow Fire, as well as Luna, New Mexico; Luna is threatened by the most active aspect of the Wallow Fire.

The winds in the fire region are expected to be a bit calmer today than Monday, helping firefighters battling the blaze. The National Weather Service predicts winds will reach 15 mph. Wednesday was expected to be the same but Thursday winds could pick up again with gusts reaching 40 mph.
