The early Easter has brought snow to a holiday more closely associated with spring. Snow has hit Scotland as well as England's north and northeast.

It is a white Easter for many with snow and bitterly cold conditions affecting parts of the UK.

Any hopes of spring-like weather over the holiday weekend disappeared on Saturday as snow, sleet and strong winds hit much of the UK, as predicted.

Wintry showers began to spread southwards from Scotland and north-eastern England in the early hours of Sunday morning.

By 5am snow was falling across north-east England, Yorkshire and Manchester and was forecast to make its way down through the Midlands and East Anglia.

Forecasters say the UK is always more likely to have a white Easter than a white Christmas.
