Pickens has made his money. He is known for eccentric spending, including donating over $100 million to his alma mater to help them put in better sports facilities. Any other oilman and I would question it. Pickens - he means what he says and he says what he means.
When anyone invests $300 million dollars into promoting alternative energy sources, the Democrats usually take notice. When that person is an oil tycoon, brother of a "Bush Pioneer", and someone who was a major contributor to the 2004 Swift Boat ads, that person gets an invitation from Nancy Pelosi to speak before the House Democratic Caucus.
Meet T. Boone Pickens.
His plan is grabbing support from both sides of the fence, but the Democrats in particular have embraced it. This is happening despite Pickens' recent criticism of Al Gore's plan.

- US Oil imports nearing 70% at $700 billion per year
- The United States uses 25% of the oil in the world
- Natural Gas is the 2nd largest natural resource in the country and accounts for 22% of the electricity produced
- There are 8,000,000 cars in the world that run on natural gas
- Wind can replace the need for natural gas in electric production

It's not a donation. He's actually trying to make money off of it. Well, that and he's going to get an $80,000 tax credit every hour his wind farm is at full capacity.
But I've got to give Mr. Pickens his due. He knows energy. Even if he is in it only for the money (which is the best reason I can think of to start a business in the first place) he will have a better chance at getting it done than many others because he has the expertise. And he has the capital to put something like this in motion.
I personally think that wind power isn't going to solve anything (except for maybe cutting down on the bird population). Natural gas is interesting. But who really knows what is going to replace oil - or even if it will be replaced in our lifetimes.

I don't really support your sentiments (oilmen are bad?) but this is going to be a very important story for another week or so then, if it's successful, we'll hear about it again in a couple of years. Have you seen his commercials and lectures about this? Do you think he has a good plan?

I wasn't saying that oilmen are bad. I was saying that, because he's an oilman, we shouldn't assume that he's doing it for the money. He can make a TON of money by sticking with oil, especially considering recent happenings across the country and the world.
In other words, if it's just money he's after, he could play it safe and stick with the sure thing. The fact that he's an oilman gives more credibility to the plan, IMO. If it works, he will definitely make money, but I don't believe that is his intention at all.

Good stuff! I have been reading about this guy, and he seems pretty genuine in his philanthropic causes. Though I must admit, I despise the SBVT ads.
He probably sees this as an opportunity to capitalize on a wide open market. If he is one step ahead of everybody else I am sure he will receive some big government contracts and support for his products by the American people.

JD Rucker, good background information. When America started Electric Lighting to guys fought the scenario: Edison with DC power and Lamps and Tesla with "long distance" AC power generators from the Niagara falls including AC tube lighting. Tesla was financed by Westing House. Same run today for renewable windpower. With the surplus energy during low demand Hydrogen could be generated to store for Fuel cell cars and fuel cell heated homes. That needs innovative forward thinking people like at Edison's time. I guess you don't find them ourdays in America's mediocracy for comfort and petrol addiction as Bush says.

Should be great: Pickens Plan + Al Gore's Challenge + Barack Obama as the next President of the USA who is taking care of the climate problems and who will lead the USA to a society build on renewable energy.
There's nothing wrong with making money on renewable energy. It is the investment worthy.

What a shame that the "global warming" booger which is going to be used for the government parasites to control and bleed the ignorant has to enter the picture for new energy sources. Gore gives a black eye to what should be a search for energy conservation and source improvements!

We have to go gangbusters on all rational ways to reduce our dependency on foreign oil - extensive drilling, many more nuclear plants, biofuels not made from foodstuffs and conservation. The great problem on wind power is that you still have to build the capacity you need using fossil fuels or nuclear in order to supply the demand when the wind isn't blowing.
