Fire crews are keeping a watchful eye on a wildfire three kilometres outside Whitehorse, the capital of Canada's Yukon territory.

Grass and brush are burning just east of the Yukon River near Long Lake Road.

Local officials believe that the small fire was caused by an abandoned campfire.

The incident is the latest in a string of wildfires in the area. A total of 38 wildfires have been reported in the territory so far this season, burning more than 22,000 hectares of forest.

A large fire about 80 kilometres from Dawson City is still burning.
