India's ambitious wind power capacity may exceed previous estimates by fivefold.  The Indian government has been promoting the development of wind generated electricity with tax breaks and loans in an effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the expanding economy of that country.

Wind energy capacity can climb to as much as 231,000 megawatts in India, compared with the government’s forecast of 48,000 megawatts from 216 potential sites, according to the study, produced in partnership with the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association.

India has thousands of kilometres of coastline which might be suitable for wind farms.  Currently, the majority of electricity in India is produced by burning fossil fuels.  Figures provided by the Indian Ministry of Power show that coal, gas and diesel provide approximately 97 000 MW of power with Hydro electric providing about 37 000 MW, followed by Nuclear at 4 000 MW.  RES(renewable energy sources) comes in presently at 13 000 MW.
If these ambitious plans come to fruition, over 500 million tons of carbon dioxide per year could be prevented from entering Earth's atmosphere.
