North India in the grip of cold wave

Winter chill seems to be setting in the Indian national capital  Delhi with temperature dipping below 15 degrees Celsius. The mercury touched a low of 13.6 degrees for the day today, about 2.5 degrees less than yesterday's minimum temperatute. the chill ushered in by the morning showers of Wednesday has finally announced the arrival of winter in the city. Indian Met department expects the humidity levels to go up in the coming few days. This would in turn create favourable conditions for fog formation.

The temperature may still be a few degrees above normal but Met officials say it is the effect of the cloud cover. Once that goes - it is expected to clear in a day - the dip in temperature will be drastic.

The western disturbance, according to the met department, was the reason behind Wednesday's downpour.

''The rainfall was caused due to the approaching western disturbances. With a partly cloudy sky, temperatures tend to stay slightly above normal. However, as soon as the disturbance passes and the skies begin to clear out, you can expect a sudden fall in the temperature,'' said a met official.

The heat radiations from the earth's surface, enveloped by the partly cloudy skies, are unable to escape causing a rise in temperatures. The minimum temperature recorded on Thursday was 16 degree celsius, five degrees above normal. However, according to met officials, the temperature is expected to witness a significant fall of 3-4 degrees by Friday evening.
