As tornadoes ravaged northern Florida, winter storms hit the midwest.

The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings for parts of Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Arkansas and other states.

Up to a foot of snow could fall in Louisville, Kentucky, with the heaviest precipitation expected late Friday and early Saturday, The Associated Press reported.

"It could get real nasty," Dusty Harbage, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Jackson, Kentucky, told the AP.

The winter storm dumped up to 9 inches of snow in north Texas on Thursday.

A heavy late-winter snowstorm Friday pummeled residents from Arkansas to the Great Lakes, knocking out electricity for thousands and promising to bring near-blizzard conditions to Ohio and Kentucky.

While the storms dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of Arkansas and left about 44,000 homes and businesses without power, people in southern Ohio and northern Kentucky were bracing for a massive snowstorm.

"It could get real nasty," said Dusty Harbage, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Jackson, Ky.

Kyle Rose, 34, of Springfield in southwest Ohio, said he was heating up leftover chili for dinner instead of going to the grocery store in the snow. He planned to spend a lot of time shoveling this weekend.

"I guess I try to stay in front of it," Rose said. "I'd rather shovel 4 inches twice than 8 inches once."

An Ohio Highway Patrol spokesman said the agency responded to 610 crashes statewide over 7 1/2 hours Friday. A 20-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in eastern Ohio was closed after a tractor-trailer went off the road.

Each day I walk five miles through the downtown area of Cincinnati. I saw fewer people this day than any I can remember.

It was a calm morning, but changed quickly to snowfall, it took me to drive over an hour to work, normally it takes 20 min. Everything was covered with snow.

The snow began in Memphis, Tennessee at about 11:30 a.m. on March 7th. By 2 p.m. there was a very thin layer of snow collecting, and by 4 p.m. there was a blanket. It was quite brisk and snowing heavily after 5 p.m. and as of midnight it is still snowing, but not nearly as heavy.

Biggest snow fall in Cincinnati so far this year. It started on March 7 in the morning, and while there have been a few interruptions, it is still snowing 24 hours later! I love to see downtown in the snow and I can't wait to get out!

This is the first measurable show we have had in Warren, Arkansas since 2000. This was taken outside my back door.

This is my first winter in Cincinnati, OH and was told by the locals downtown that it never snows much here.
They were so wrong :)

This shot is from last weeks "wintery" mix. There was ice, sleet, and snow and brought the whole area to a stand still. Now we have six inches of just snow..the biggest problem is the ground is saturated and flooding has become a big problem around this area (Ohio River Valley).

I love the term "wintery mix"... "icy slushy nastiness falling from the sky" just doesn't sound as good.

I called this snowman "Easy Rider" and sent the photo to my grandchildren. But my grandaughter looked at the flag print on his head and proclaimed him the "God Bless America Snowman".

The unusual March snow for Arkansas was forecasted by the Local & National Weather Service.

Some areas of Arkansas received over 12 inches, while the North Little Rock area had about 3-4 inches.

Since a few days earlier the temperature was 75 degrees, the ground retained some of that warmth leaving the snow to accumulate mostly on grassy & elevated surfaces.

I took this photo March 7th, 2008 of my dog, Porkchop, in the backyard.

Winter in Louisville, KY hasn't been this bad since about 1997, from what I remember.

I greatly appreciated the day off of school too. A nice long weekend to enjoy the snow Louisville never gets.

Most of it melted when it hit the ground, but we had just enough snow to cover the grass.
