ice storm 2009____

Winter storms across the United States are causing school closures and have even been responsbile for a few deaths.

School districts in Olympia, Maryland, Dallas, Austin, Houston and Arlington could all be affected by what some meteorologists are calling potentially the worse ice storm in five years.

Freezing rain and sleet are hitting states from Texas to Kentucky, causing havoc on roads and stranding people trying to travel from one place to another.

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning from Dallas, Texas to Memphis, Tennessee.

The storm is though to have killed five people already.

"We're experiencing some problems," said Tommy Jackson, spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. "The northwest part of the state was hit worse than any other part. We've got scattered power outages."

Roads north of Little Rock are passable, he said, but bridges and overpasses are "extremely hazardous and ice-covered." Jackson said a tractor-trailer jackknifed overnight on U.S. Highway 65, but no injuries were reported.

In parts of Oklamhoma and Arkansas, about 5,855 people are currently without power.
This morning a FedEx plane crashed in Lubbock Texas due to icy conditions on the runway. Two crew members were injured.
Snow is still falling across the rest of the United States, and some airports are experiencing flight delays, but none too significant at the moment.

In Charleston, SC, we didn't get much ice, but it got terribly cold, so we put out a sprinkler!

The morning after the ice storm. This is Boxborough MA. At the time the ice was still heavy on the trees and the frequent sound of snapping treetops and limbs was everywhere.
The sun had just come out and there was still a bluish haze the sun was filtering through.

School school closures in upstate New York as the storm hits.

Most of the closings are in the eastern half of the state, where forecasts predict 8 to 16 inches of snow in the Adirondacks and up to a foot in the Albany area by Wednesday night.

The snow is being brought to the region by a low-pressure system moving from the Tennessee Valley northeastward. It will cross Pennsylvania by this afternoon then move to coastal New England by this evening.

Toronto is also under a snowfall advisory (surprise!). If you're flying in or out of Toronto today, check your flight at Pearson Int'l Airport's website.
A snow storm is causing many delays and cancellations. Halton Public, Catholic and French Catholic schools are closed today. School buses have been cancelled for the Peel District school board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school board. Pearson Airport is also being affected by the storm.

The governor of Kentucky has called out the National Guard...(a bit late in my opinion). The mayor of one rural town is telling residents to get in their cars and head south to motels if they have the means.

It's not over yet. And now flooding is starting to occur.
