With all of the news focusing on Beijing and the smoggy atmosphere that they are afflicted with, we must not forget Los Angeles. Also known as "The City of Angeles". Owing to the unique geography and the heavy reliance on automobiles, Los Angeles suffers from extreme air pollution. This is due to the atmospheric inversion in the The Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley which holds in the exhausts from Vehicles, Manufacturing, Aircraft, Locomotives, and many other sources. This pollution will accumulate over many days.

The challenge that exists with the air quality in Los Angeles and other major cities has led to the passage of the Clean Air Act. Recently, the State of California has led the nation in an attempt to clear the air by requiring Low-Emision vehicles.

Because of this, the pollution levels have dropped. Including the number of Stage 1 Smog Alerts which have dropped from over 100 per to almost zero. Even with this decline, Los Angeles is still ranked as the most polluted city in the country. Until this year. In 2008 Pittsburg, Pennsylvania has surpassed Los Angeles as the most polluted city in America.

Thanks for posting this -- it looks like quite the smoggy atmosphere. But can you please give your story some more depth by explaining why LA's smog is newsworthy today? How did pollution levels today compare with yesterday's or last week's?

lgal3824, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Hum, those facts may have been forgotten at the Olympics as every one made it sound like Beijing was the only City with high air pollution. And wile the Olympics where held in LA some time ago it was most likely the same then in Beijing yet not one seemed to worry to much then. Those double standards.
