March 22nd is World Water Day 2010
While you're having a glass of water, remember that March 22nd is World Water Day. The international observance of World Water Day started at a United Nations conference in 1992.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution. This world day for water was to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21.
The day is designed to promote awareness about improving and maintaining the quality of water in the world's ecosystems by encouraging governments and organizations to make water quality a priority.
World Water Day 2010 Aims to Inform
The World Water Day 2010 theme is water quality and 'reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management'.
The World Water Day 2010 site has media kit that includes six documents about water quality and your role in keeping water pure.
The site reports that the quality of water in the world is on the decline, mainly due to human activities. The organization believes that the problem is mostly related to a lack of water data, and that people are simply unaware of the role they play in water pollution.
Past themes for World Water Day include:
- Transboundary Waters (2009)
- Sanitation (2008)
- Coping with Water Scarcity (2007)
