This chap quite obviously was unashamed about making sure we knew he was male!
He's apparently losing his darker winter coat. Red Squirrels moult twice a year - first from front to back, then from back to front. In the winter they even have hair on the soles of their feet. The ear tufts are longer in the winter, so in a little while this chap will be a gorgeous red and white but tuftless. Pity.
There are few strongholds left in Britain for these beautiful creatures though we saw them frequently whilst on our trip - and I don't mean at the feeder! The forests gave us sightings every day, including one occasion when two were together at the edge of the pines.
Grey Squirrels are gradually pushing these smaller, native squirrels out of their natural environment. We were told that if a Grey Squirrel is seen in the area where we stayed it has to be reported - I imagine to prevent them establishing themselves locally.
