The world's most famous polar bear, who provoked fierce debates on animal rights, and also appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, is now involved in another battle, this time over who will get all his money!

I'm assuming it's not going to him.

However, the latest twist in the Knut saga is, not surprisingly, centred around money – and precisely who has the rights to the Knut goldmine.

A legal battle between two zoos has begun in Berlin, with the Neumuenster zoo in northern Germany claiming it is due a slice of the Knut millions because the polar bear's father, Lars, resides there and, as such, it is the legal owner of Lars's first offspring.

Knut himself lives in Berlin zoo, where he is thought to have been the cause of a €5m (£4m) increase in revenue last year. Visitor numbers rose by 30%, making it the most successful year in the zoo's 163-year history.

Neumuenster zoo says that when the polar bear cub was born in 2006 a deal was made with the Berlin zoo over the issue.

However, while Berlin zoo says it recognises Neumuenster's ownership in principle, it maintains that does not give the zoo a right to any proceeds from Knut's incredible popularity.

Peter Druewa, the zoo director at Neumuenster, said in a statement that his zoo had tried to negotiate with Berlin zoo but was now looking to a court in Berlin for a ruling on the matter.

''We do not want to remove Knut from his environment,'' he said. ''But we have a right to our request for money.''

Knut won over the hearts and minds of Germans and went on to attract worldwide popularity after he was rejected by his mother, Tosca, soon after birth. A debate began about intervening to keep him alive

Zookeepers pulled him from a rock in the enclosure with an extended fishing net before placing him in an incubator to help him survive.

He was then raised and cared for by zookeeper Thomas Dorflein.

However, as he got larger and more dangerous, the detrimental impact of the large amount of human contact throughout his life, along with his daily shows put on at the zoo, began to surface.

Most recently came the reports that Knut was addicted to human attention.

Here is a link to his website - it's very cute!

Good question:

Here is the answer:

After an unproblematic gestation time, Knut and his unnamed brother were born on 5 December 2006. Tosca rejected her cubs for unknown reasons, abandoning them on a rock in the polar bear enclosure.[6] Zoo keepers rescued the cubs by scooping them out of the enclosure with an extended fishing net,[6] but Knut's brother died of an infection four days later. Knut was the first polar bear to have been born and survive in the Berlin Zoo in over thirty years. Only the size of a guinea pig, he spent the first 44 days of his life in an incubator before zoo keeper Thomas Dörflein began raising the cub.[7]

I think she was growing up in an formerly east-german circus and there she wasn't treated right. Mayby torture an chemicals where involved. She is always shaking her head and going back and forth for about four steps. It looks like she has some damage on her brain. How to crow up children properly she doesn't know, never learned.

There was a story on Knut I don't remember where. It was about certain groups who thought that Polar bears shouldn't be kept by humans. I guess Knut's mother rejected him and some group wanted to put him to sleep. I can't even think about that without tearing up...I was sad at the time and Knut's picture made me smile so I put on my Flickr pictures Its been there ever since..Thanks for finding it.....

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. The Money should go to the Polar Bears habitat and in preserving them, maybe to finance a law suite against the world largest polutters that are causing the melt down!

I observed Knut entertaining the public by tossing, swinging and dangling an old potato sack for over half an hour. He was like a clown. I can only think of circus animals the way he perfomed. See my other sack pictures. He definitely wants human attention. He does not know any other bears or how they would live, so all he can crave is human attention.
It shows that he is an intelligent creature, and so it is very unfortunate that he cannot live a natural polar bear life, but he would surely die in the wild. Instead here he can live a comfortable and happy life in the zoo, and presumably they will find him a mate, so they can live happily ever after.
I totally abhor keeping animals in zoos in general, but there is benefit to bring to the public attention the other creatures we must share this planet with.

Hello!

I saw him during the last easter holidays and I wondered why his fur has become grey now..is it always like this when polar bears get older?

there really was a big 'bohai' over this bear. He now is the un ambassador for saving our environment. I think, this was made to set out signs. on the other hand you can look at it this way: an animal which is in a cage and never will be outside has to defend our envireonment, how poor is this?
