Aunt Jackie

A viral dance craze is a funny thing. In the early days of TV, a bunch of shiny teens doing the twist on a show like American Bandstand was enough to get their peers across North America to start shaking their hips. But with the internet, the way youth get culture from each other and the way the rest of the world sees youth culture has changed dramatically. It's no longer just about the pretty idea of what kids should be dancing like, or caring about...it's what kids are dancing like, and are caring about.

That's why I love this new Harlem-based dance craze, the Aunt Jackie. First posted on YouTube by Jason Fox and the Ft. Hood Presidents, the song celebrates not the usual trappings of rap (which are all well and good, but I think we're all getting a little tired of it), but a topic many kids can get behind--the feeling of joy you get from listening to great old school music with a cool older relative (the aforementioned Aunt Jackie). The joy is felt not just in thinking about that feeling, but in expressing it through one of the happier, more uplifting dance moves I've seen in awhile.

I love the Aunt Jackie. It reminds me of summer in New York, and the lively, teeming, hot streets of Harlem. I've got my fingers crossed that it spreads like wildfire. And so do, it seems, many others; MTV has picked up on it, according to this great piece about Aunt Jackie in Slate by Jody Rosen.

MTV has jumped on the trend, launching a doofy how-to show called "Dances From Tha Hood." Sure enough, they've already broadcast a primer on the "Aunt Jackie." It looks incredibly corny after watching all the ebullient freestyle hoofers on YouTube—but it may just come in handy as an instructional video for certain rhythmically challenged pop critics.
Here's what people are saying about Aunt Jackie on the nets:
You know me, I'm an old fuddy duddy who's always 6 months (or more) late on every new trend. But better late than never, so here's how to dance the latest hip dance: Aunt Jackie.
This is a perfect example of mass behavior and cumulative advantage. This dance is a form of ‘interaction’ between people in the Hip Hop community. Knowing that over 90% of communications has nothing to do with what you say, this dance move is a form of communication between people and a way to interact and connect with each other.
With hip-hop sales stagnating, influential people like Jermaine Dupri are looking at the genre’s past to ignite its future. Case in point: Harlem producer-rapper Jason Fox, who was recently signed to JD’s new label based on the YouTube popularity of his track “Aunt Jackie” (below). The song is ridiculously simple in an old-school way—it sounds like a newly unearthed Sugarhill Gang track (we’re talking pre-Run-DMC rap here). And, like recent hit “Chicken Noodle Soup,” the lyrics are mostly just fun placeholders: “I got the feelin’ when I’m chillin’ with my Aunt Jackie/ The type of music you can use to make your aunt happy.” But the words aren’t the point. “Aunt Jackie” was made for dancing, whether it be in the streets, at a club, in your bedroom or on the internet.
Oh, and hey: see that hopelessly rhythm-less photo of some NP staffers doing the Aunt Jackie? Why don't you join in on the fun? Take a photo of you and your friends doing it and upload it to the story (click the orange "Upload Photos" button below the title)? Come on, you know you wanna...

Kaitlin, this is good stuff. And this is an important lesson to me that when sober I really shouldn't try to dance...even if it's the 'Aunt Jackie'.

I did this dance last Saturday night - having seen it first on your
video report, Kaitlin, and it is very easy and comfortable to do.
Holding the hands together gives a different kind maneuverability. I
was applauded! :) Had a great night!

I love the fact that you are reporting on dance trends! I really appreciate it.

Thank  you!
