Huge red tide bloom choking off oxygen to Gulf floor, creating dead zone

TAMPA -- An unusually
fierce red tide bloom this summer has choked off oxygen and killed
undersea life in a large region of the Gulf of Mexico bottom about 10
miles offshore, scientists said.

The area between northern Pinellas and Pasco counties covers some of
the spots where divers previously reported a ``dead zone'' void of sea
life. Preliminary results of the research were reported Monday
following a research cruise by scientists last week.
