This design is a joke about the online social community " Facebook." I
for one, have been wasting my time being " face hooked." I initially created this
design to remind me to spend more time drawing. I use online social networks to promote Islands Fold, an artist residency that my partner and I operate out of our own pockets. We just celebrated our one year anniversary.
I submitted the design
to www.threadless.com. All winning designs win $1500. If I had of one,
I would have used the
money to help fund Islands Fold. The design was well received by my
peers and supporters, but unfortunately scored a very low rating from
hundreds of other voters. Therefore, it was dropped out of the running.
I can understand why hundreds of people didn't like my design for a tee
shirt. I like knowing that all these people had an opinion about it,
and got to see it and think about it.
The
" face hooked" design reflects on my personal opinion of online social
networks, and I have no intention to offend or insult people that spend
a lot of time using them. The positive thing about these networks, is
that it gives me more exposure to my creative
projects. The negative effect on such online communities as " facebook"
is that I get hooked on being social, in a community I don't really
want to
be too social in. I prefer being social with people in person, not on
the
web. I also recognize that I have met a lot of artist friends through
the internet, and the majority of our residents at Islands fold , have
first met me first online.
