Fark: A giant piece of Canada just broke off and drifted away. No, not Quebec

The ancient mass of ice -- the equivalent of 11,000 football fields -- broke away from the Coast of Ellesmere Island in the North. Scientists say this is a piece of Canadian geography that doesn't exist anymore. The ice shelf started breaking up in the middle of last August, but no one noticed the event.

"We think this incident is consistent with global climate change," Vincent said, adding that the remaining ice shelves are 90 per cent smaller than when they were first discovered in 1906.

At NowPublic, this is high praise from NowPublic editors! Your story is now on the home page for awhile, and everywhere else the “good stuff” box shows up. Many thanks for your great work.

The last couple of days, it has been really disheartening to see the ignorant "global warming is just hysteria" mob acting as though the recent allegedly 'bogus' story about Lohachara was a victory for them, or as if it proves that global warming is not real. (Then again, these are the same people who also think that an unusually cold winter is evidence against global warming, showing that these people don't have any grasp of what global warming actually is.)

So a story like this one is a big splash of cold, wet, shocking reality to their faces -- something which is much needed after their recent erroneous and unjustified gloating.

Thank you, Victoria!

I want to congratulate you for your comment.  It is wonderfully arrogant, managing to capture not only the condescending nature of your argument, or lack thereof, as well as being emotionally self-righteous, all in one simple paragraph.

Evidence of global climate change is all around us.  But to immediately jump to the conclusion that it is man-made, and that it can be stopped by behavioral changes cannot be scientifically supported beyond a reasonable doubt.  No one that I read has any doubts that the world is warming.  So, your comment that this story is somehow a "big splash of cold, wet, shocking reality" is simply more hyperbole.

What science cannot tell us beyond a reasonable doubt is whether or not these changes are cyclical, or indeed caused by CO2 emissions.

And, if is because of CO2 emissions, then why were the Middle Ages much warmer than today?

It would be presumptuous of me to speak for all of the "ignorant global warming is just hysteria" mob, but the fact is, you enlightened, "reality-based" folks do yourself no good at all by printing and supporting whoppers like the Lohachara story.  Most of us would welcome a discussion of the facts, rather than hearing that the debate is over, and that there is no other choice but to accept your prescription for solving a problem that man may, in fact, be completely powerless to affect.

And, if the latter, then mankind will do as he has always done:  adapt, improvise, and overcome.

Wow Dave Ward.  Pointing out that a story is untrue is being part of an "ignorant global warming is just hysteria" mob? The truth hurts I see.

News flash Dave, did you know that you can find seashells in the desert? Apparently someone didn't get the memo that the seas were receding way back when.

Wow Sarah D.

So, you really, honestly believe that what you posted showed the Lohachara story was untrue? and you really, genuinely don't know why seashells can be found in the desert, and why fossils of fish can be found on land? That's amazing, baffling, and very sad. The state of science education today leaves something to be desired.  I hardly know what to say. Innocent ignorance is one thing, but deliberate and persistently-defended ignorance is another. There's nothing that can be done to educate those who are doggedly determined to remain ignorant.

I wish you well in your quest to distance yourself from reality, fact, and logic.

LOL!  Ward, you are too funny!

What I posted readers can discern for themselves.  You would certainly better bolster your position by highlighting real science.

To Dave and Sarah,

This is the debate.  Unless you are too caught up in the "hysteria mob" to see that for yourselves.  Fortunately, if the mob is wrong, we end up with clean energy solutions all around.  If you are wrong...well...get out your bathing suits and gas masks.
