UPDATE 5 p.m.: Val Prieto of the Miami-based Babalu blog is following the situation closely in this post here. Here's a snip of his report so far:
Here's the deal and what I know up to now, as of 1500 hours, August 24, 2007:
First, South Florida Law Enforcement is on alert. An EOC (Emergency Operations Center) has been set-up and manned somewhere in Homestead.
Im also told Local and State government agencies have food, bottled water, and other necessities - valued in the millions - stored and/or staged in Homestead at or near the EOC.
I am presently verifying whether Coast Guard and DHS and Border Patrol agencies are on high alert. (Verified 01445)
Local News stations are abuzz, mostly on reports very much like the above, with massive law enforcemnt mobilizations throughout Dade county.
Local emergency medical services notified to be on alert by law enforcement agencies.
Dead Castro or not, it seems like something is happening, if these reports are to be trusted. Prieto offers this possible explanation for all the action and offers some sound advice to readers to not get caught up in speculation:
Just got off the phone with a local Congressman's media relations person: Nothing is official, lots of buzz, no confirmation. However, was told something that may make unfortunate sense: the Cuban government has gotten us all riled up only to proudly and snidely display fidel castro in full green fatigues regalia. I know it's difficult right now, for me especially (trust me), but we need to keep our wits about us and trust only that which we can verify.

thanks for keeping us informed...what's the sentiment in the community and on the street? Do people think he's actually dead?

I think some people hope so much for Fidel Castro's death that they believe it every time these rumors pop up. But the police here are doing what was described in the highlight without really explaining to the public why. However, since there have been rumors like these before, everyone is more tense and a bit more patient to hear verifiable news. Last time, people ran into the streets to celebrate without thinking before going out, literally. This time everyone is more reserved but hopeful. If it is true, then many will try to go to Cuba and bring their families back to Miami because Raul, Fidel Castro's brother, is in power now and not much will change or so they say.

those rumors have been happening since noon Miami time. These started with local police informing citizens that there was an alert.

Is anyone else old enough to remember the SNL skit about Generalissimo Franco still being dead?

With Chevy Chase as anchorman? I remember those skits and NOT from reruns, Rick!
