At 1:56, my cell phone rang - it was Amanda, riding her bicycle home down the back streets of Huston. She told me to grab my bicycle and run outside, that there was "very, very large cloud of smoke in the sky".
I grabbed the camera, the bike, my flip-flops and headed out the door and down the street. I started
snapping pics as I rode, even before I met her at the corner of Cahuenga.
As we got closer to Hills and further from North Hollywood; the colors in the smoke became clearer - there were huge sections of black mixed in with the grey and dark yellow. Every few minutes a helicopter would emerge, on it's way back to the Reservoir for more water., several news choppers circled the mountains.
A man walking his dog and talking on his cell phone told us that the north face of Mount Lee, behind the cemetery, was on fire.
