Six thousand volunteers sounds like a lot to me - but Palm Beach is no stranger to emergencies.

I found this article (which was originally posted to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel) on EMS Responder which is a great site. Would love to find a volunteer to tell us what it's like.

Palm Beach County is looking for 6,000 men and women to become part of its trained volunteer force to assist in a public health emergency.

The Cities Readiness Initiative is charged with getting ready for a countywide disaster, such as a bioterrorism attack or widespread outbreak of the bird flu, according to Dianne Laubert, senior director of communications for the United Way of Palm Beach County.

"Our role is to help recruit and train needed volunteers should a situation occur in our community. Just like when the hurricane comes through, we set up a volunteer reception center, and that's where all the volunteers come," she said.
