Two unrelated items that appeared in a local crime report in Washington, DC stick out as being related. These incidents are for the week ending May 25, 2007.
Police report #1"Robbery occurred in the 3400 block of Connecticut Ave NW between the hours of 7:45 am and 7:46 am. Patron reports she was pushed from behind and that her groceries were taken form her."
Police report #2"Unlawful entry occurred in the 2800 block of Northampton Street NW between the hours of 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm. A babysitter reports while in the apartment, a subject entered the apartment through an unlocked door. The subject wanted food and the sitter asked him to leave and he did. Nothing was taken."
Not money. Not electronics. But food. These two crimes make you wonder: Is having to steal food a symptom of a bigger problem in Washington, DC?

Thanks, Bill Adler.
I would say it totally has to do with a bigger problem. Most likely people stealing for others, probably family members. Common in Vancouver as well.
A friend of mine had his windows broken (even though he leaves his car unlocked to prevent such things). He couldn't figure out why, until he saw that half a muffin he'd left in his car, which was otherwise empty, had been stolen. Hunger is a strange thing.
