One of the most fierce running competitions in the world -- the Marathon des Sables or Marathon of the Sands in Morocco has claimed a life of a 49 year-old French runner. Bernard Juke was found in his tent by his tent mates about 40 kilometres from Rissani in south-eastern Morocco. He died of a heart attack. The marathon is a gruelling 240 kilometres, which is about five and a half marathons and the course is the Sahara where temperatures can get up to 50 Celsius. The marathon was founded in 1986 by a Frenchman, Patrick Bauer.

About 700 people pay around $5,000 (£2,565) each for the privilege of competing in the race.

The Marathon des Sables, or Marathon of the Sands, is a six-day, 240km kilometres (150 miles) endurance race, run across a section of the Sahara desert in southern Morocco.

This is the second death in the history of the Sand Marathon, since its launch in 1986. Another Frenchman died during its third edition.
