Gays Encounter "Mixed Vibes" At Reggae Carifest 2007

The Gay protestors that answered the roll call on Saturday at the Reggae Carifest Concert on New York's Randall Island encountered mixed results to their cause. The small group that gathered with signs and banner in tow spoke out loudly against the soft background of Reggae music that emitted from the venue. 

The all day event was considered a general success, with the crowd of thousands consisting mainly of die hard reggae lovers and members of the Caribbean community, Gay and straight alike. The standard public affection commonly conducted by gay couples was not present at the event, signaling a respect for the deep cultural morals of the pre-dominant Caribbean community in attendance. 

One patron in attendance stated, “Dem deh here, but dem cool.” 

The mid-week prelude of Power 105 sponsorship withdrawal did nothing to damper the “vibes” of the event and the fans in attendance were delivered a tasteful performance by Bounty Killa and Buju Banton. Both Artistes signed a disclaimer before performing. 

In an exclusive interview on regional station NY1, Buju commented that protestors and their supporters were “I would say to them they are ignorant, they are stupid, even though they proclaim to be intelligent,” said Banton. 

Event promoter James Burton commented on the obvious mix and blend of people representing members of all sexual orientations, who sang and danced together throughout the event.  “I promote to everybody,” said Burton. “If you check, we have gays inside.”
