Germans probe assault on Indians

German authorities are trying to identify the suspects and motives behind a mob assault on eight Indians in a small eastern German town.

All eight Indian men were injured in the attack, in which about 50 Germans chased them through the streets of Mügeln after a fair early on Sunday.

Despite the Mayor of Mügeln's claims that "if this was a far-right incident, then the assailants did not come from Muegeln", stories like this one are becoming very familiar of late in Germany, particularly in the former East as other recent stories report. I, for one, would be interested to know how the mayor can be so certain, as the suspects in this case remain unidentified at this time.

Far-right nationalist organisations are said to appeal to young, largely unemployed groups who feel let down by the government, and seek to blame immigrant workers for "stealing their jobs", despite the fact that the the greater proportion of immigrants take on jobs these groups themselves would not be prepared to do.
