LOUISVILLE, United States (AFP) - Giacomo, a 50-1 longshot, won the 131st Kentucky Derby, stunning favorite Bellamy Road and the rest of the 20-horse field in the first jewel in US flat racing's triple crown.

Trained by John Shirreffs - saddling his first Derby starter - and ridden by Mike Smith, Giacomo came from off the sizzling early pace set by Spanish Chestnut to claim the victory ahead of 70-1 shot Closing Argument and second choice Afleet Alex.
