Thursday, June 21st, a 13-year-old girl's feet were detached from the ankle down while riding the Superman Tower of Power ride in Six Flags' Kentucky Kingdom. Witnesses say the cable on the ride just snapped and the passengers on the ride fell and hit the ground. Witnesses also say the girl was completely calm, probably from shock. The ride has been closed indefinitely while an official investigation takes place. No one is sure when, exactly, during their fall her ankles became severed. There has been no word on the girl's condition.

This is pretty much the most awful thing I have ever heard.

That's just horrible. I'm a pretty devil-may-care kinda guy, but when I worked as a camp counselor, I saw amusement parks as vipers' nests of potential kidnappers, deadly rides and sickening food. Nothing bad ever happened, though, at least to my young charges... the memories of previous roller-coaster disasters and now this make me realize how lucky we were.
Scary rides are all about the enjoyment found in risk, but the risk isn't supposed to be real.
