JUSTIN B. WILLIAMS
Curated by Mo Salemy
Xeno Gallery
June 6- July 13, 2004
Even though he has been drawing all his life, Justin B. Williams work
began its public life in the streets of Tokyo. After quickly getting
disappointed with the idea of beautifying the streets with human
characters, he crossed to the other side and started to intentionally
damage and distort public property with his work. Moving his graffiti
to Vancouver meant several run-ins with the police and an eventual
incarceration and deportation to USA where he actually holds a
citizenship. After living in Portland for six months and traveling
around the east and west coasts of the United States, he came back to
Vancouver a few months ago to live with his wife Kristen MacGregor a
young fashion designer and stylist.
Often compared to Jason McLean, Chris Johanson and Hundertwasser,
Justin combines North American underground comics and Japanese cartoons
to craft disorderedly layered drawings that are obsessively arranged
with real or imaginary characters and landscapes. Despite their
apparent exchange value, these images represent the emotional
complexity, social mystery, historical uncertainty and widespread
nihilism inherent in today’s youth culture.
For this show Justin is creating his first three dimensional
installation commemorating 06/06/06, the dreaded date of triple sixes
that echoes the Mark of the Beast, the coming of the Antichrist and the
prophecy of the Apocalypse — the destruction of the world and the
potential bloodbath awashing the ultimate showdown between “good” and
“evil”.
