When these moderate republicans go back to their districts, they'll be forced to explain to the fundamentalist morons why they voted to 'destroy' marriage. While there's almost no danger these fundies will vote for the democratic opponents, there's a real possibility that they just won't go to the polls at all - a common tendency of dissatisfied conservatives. A move made to drive conservative christians to the polls may just get them to stay home in many key districts.

And high-tech vote-fixing might give Americans a Republican dynasty for the next 40 years.

I don't know. It seems to me that if they felt they had a lock on any election they wanted, they wouldn't care about political theater like this. Not all states have Diebold machines anyway - CA rejected them, for example. Here in WI, we use electronic scanners, so there's a paper trail of the scanned ballots.

The political theater is necessary to encourage Americans to believe
that they live in a democratic society. Never mind about the other
states -- The pivotal state is Ohio. Whichever party gets control of
Ohio's electronic voting machines, gets the White House.
